About me
Sebastião Pais is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Computer Science of the University of Beira Interior (UBI), Portugal, where he has taught and conducted research since 2016. He is a researcher at NOVA LINCS (Portugal) and collaborates with the CNRS GREYC UMR 6072 laboratory (France).
His research lies at the intersection of Natural Language Processing, Machine Learning and Affective Computing, with a particular interest in methods that are reliable, explainable and socially useful.
Research interests
- Affective computing and multimodal sentiment analysis: modelling emotion and opinion across text, audio and video.
- Computational mental health: early detection of depression and other mental-health signals from language and social media.
- Trustworthy large language models: explainability and machine unlearning in LLMs.
- Information retrieval, text mining and social network analysis.
Background
He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science in 2013 from MINES ParisTech (now Mines Paris – PSL, France) and the University of Beira Interior, with the thesis Asymmetric Distributional Similarity Measures to Recognize Textual Entailment by Generality. In 2017 he was granted the French national qualification for the position of Maître de Conférences (MCF) in Computer Science.
He is a Professional Member of the ACM and a member of the French Association for Artificial Intelligence (AFIA).
